The footage, obtained by TMZ, is a closer angle of Russell the day he stripped to his birthday suit and had a full blown mental collapse. In what’s being classified as an extraordinary fall from grace, the filmmaker behind the epic online documentary KONY 2012, remains hospitalized and under an involuntary psychiatric hold following last week’s breakdown where police reportedly busted him for public drunkenness and masturbating in the middle of the street.
According to TMZ, Jason Russell was taken into police custody by San Diego officers Thursday some time before noon. Sources tell the celebrity website, that the filmmaker donning a “speedo-like underwear” caused a ruckus on the street when witnesses saw him dancing around the intersection of Ingraham and Riviera.
Russell allegedly got completely naked and “began to make sexual gestures.” It wasn’t immediately clear when and where he began masturbating. At some point Russell also reportedly vandalized cars.
Since his detainment, TMZ reports that authorities will not charge the filmmaker with any crime, instead the 33-year-old has been placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold as physicians continue to monitor his mental state.
In the state of California, a 5150 detainment allows authorities to hold a patient involuntarily for up to three days if they appear to pose a threat to others or themselves.
Invisible Children, the advocacy group behind the viral sensation KONY 2012, released a statement Friday confirming the detainment.
“Jason Russell was unfortunately hospitalized yesterday suffering from exhaustion, dehydration, and malnutrition,” Ben Keesey told TMZ in a statement Friday.
“He is now receiving medical care and is focused on getting better. The past two weeks have taken a severe emotional toll on all of us, Jason especially, and that toll manifested itself in an unfortunate incident yesterday.”
Russell is credited for being one of the masterminds behind KONY 2012 (below), a 30-minute film documenting the shocking inhumanities unleashed by war lord Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army on several communities in Uganda. The film is already being billed as the most viral video of all time, clocking in over 100 million views on the internet in less than a week.
Russell is married and has two children.
