NEW YORK (TRP) – The 2012 London Olympics haven’t even started and it appears that Team USA has found itself committing the ultimate fashion faux pas — of international proportions.
Just days after Ralph Lauren unveiled images of the official uniforms designed for the United States Olympic athletes to wear at the opening ceremonies, details behind where the flashy red, white and blue outfits were manufactured has many crying foul including one US official calling for a bonfire.
Apparently, the bright white pants,double-breasted blazers topped with the classic berets — which just oozes ‘U-S-A, U-S-A, U-S-A’ — were made in China.
The revelation has prompted many officials to lash out and flood calls into the wham-bulance. Among them was Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nevada).
“I am so upset. I think the Olympic committee should be ashamed of themselves. I think they should be embarrassed. I think they should take all the uniforms, put them in a big pile and burn them and start all over again,” he told reporters Thursday.
Reid went as far as serving up his own fashion advice for American athletes, revealing his inner fashionista.
“If they have to wear nothing but a singlet that says USA on it,painted by hand, then that’s what they should wear.”
Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.) took it to another level, calling the Olympic committee dumb.
“Today there are 600,000 vacant manufacturing jobs in this country and the Olympic committee is outsourcing the manufacturing of uniforms to China? That is not just outrageous,it’s just plain dumb. It is self-defeating.”
Meanwhile critics also took issue for the barely visible American flag on the uniforms which is nearly 2 times smaller than the Ralph Lauren logo.
What do you think about this mess? Is it a fashion crime that needs to be punished or is Congress just a little too concerned with an irrelevant issue.
