It’s that time of year again, when Google tells us what we were searching for all year. From celebrities to national tragedies, these searches sent the Internet into a tizzy.
Kicking off the list at number 10, the viral documentary KONY 2012 which exploded on the web, shedding light on indicted war criminal Joseph Kony and making filmmaker Jason Russell an overnight star – and ultimately prompted his well-publicized meltdown.
Beloved actor Michael Clarke Duncan came in at number 9 following his untimely death at the age of 54.
At number 8, the song no one could’ve escaped in 2012 — Gangnam Style. Months after its viral takeover, the music video not only left its mark on the year but on history after it became the most watched video on the web … EVER.
Amanda Todd, a teen who tragically took her own life after being cyber bullied, garnered international attention – and searches – in wake of her death and YouTube video where she told her story.
The London 2012 Olympics took the number 6 slot on the list, while NBA sensation and ex-Knick Jeremy Lin makes a splash number 5.
Landing in at number 4 was the cult phenomenon “The Hunger Games” the film that made fighting to the death, not so bad. (See: Jennifer Lawrence)
And in another “fight to the death,” Election 2012 came in at number 3 where President Obama snagged another term in office.
Hurricane Sandy and her path of destruction up the east coast which devastated countless communities, was undoubtedly the most significant event of the year and trended to the number 2 slot of top Google searches.
And at number 1, the greatest 2012 search of all: Whitney Houston. The shocking death of the pop star in February caused fans and search engines alike to reflect on the life of the superstar lost too soon.
