NEW YORK (PIX11) – In a city with over 8 million people – you’re bound to take a wrong turn and get in someone’s way.
While some get frustrated, others write a book.
Author and artist Nathan W. Pyle took the lessons he learned when he moved to New York in 2008 and put them all in a book — NYC Basic Tips and Etiquette.
“I wanted to write a book that would’ve been great if I had when I first moved here,” Pyle told PIX11 News.
The book, which is also available as an animated e-book, breaks down the right way and the wrong way to get it done in New York.
“You have to treat the sidewalks like they’re highways,” Pyle said, referring to one of the first things he learned in the big city. “You have to slim down your group. Walk two-wide, not four-wide down the block.”
Another big no-no he said, allowing technology to call the shots when you’re navigating through the subway.
“Particularly around the subway entrance you see [people] always trying to make that last text or make that phone call.”
“If you just step to the side and finish that phone call there – that would be great.”
One thing that is very important, Pyle insists, being focused.
“I think being focused is the number one way to avoid unnecessary contact.”
That few inches of difference could really make a difference between you sliding past someone or hitting them in the shoulder.”
When it comes to celebrities, the objective according to Pyle is to never lose control.
“Say you get into an elevator and you see a celebrity – you gotta play it cool,” he explains. “It’s ok to chat, just don’t act like a fan.”
