NEWARK (TRP) – Newark Mayor Cory Booker is being hailed a hero after he ran into a burning building to save his neighbor’s life.
When Booker arrived home Thursday night, he discovered that his next-door neighbors home was on fire, a spokesperson for the mayor said.
Booker who was with two members of his security detail at the time, ran over to the home to help with residents flee from the flames.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker holds a press conference Friday outside the home where he ran into a burning building to save his neighbor's life.
After learning that a young woman was still trapped in the burning home, Booker ran inside the building and began to search for her.
“When I got there and couldn’t find her in all the smoke, looked behind me and saw the kitchen really erupting with flames all over the ceiling, that’s when I had very clear thoughts that I’m not going to get out of this place alive and got … very religious,” Booker recounted on CBS’ Early Show Friday morning.
“It is a very, very scary thing. And I’d like to say that I, at that point I was feeling so courageous, but honestly, it was terrifying.”

Booker shows reporters the second-degree burns he endured after he rescued his neighbor from a burning building late Thursday.
After the victim starting yelling, Booker was able to locate her, carrying her outside the home. The mayor suffered second-degree burns in the process.
The woman, identified as 47-year-old Zina Hodge, along with the mayor were transported to nearby hospitals were they were treated for smoke inhalation and burns. Hodge remains in intensive care as of Friday.
Booker, who suffered second-degree burns on his right hand, was treated and released early Friday.
